Hi folks. We are on the ninth week of a ten week author's tour, and we are in Hartford with Ian and Aileen. Here is the data on the trips so far.
My book is Teach Your Children Well, a book about effective educational methods, illiteracy and school failure, and how to prevent them. Precision Teaching is one of the three major methods.
  • The ceilings for 2 hour book signings appears to be 3 to 4 stores per day.
  • The ceiling for media events is unknown.
  • My high score for signings at stores is 5 stores per day.
  • My highest single day score for media interviews is 7 per day.
  • We have almost no information on print media interviews, as to when or even if they were actually printed.
This chart shows our book signings for 12 weeks in Canada. The chart below shows our media events for the same period.

These data lack trends - other than consistent effort! We need a Month chart here. Read on!

These are the media events for the same period.
Here are our signings in the Eastern United States. Slightly lower in frequency.
And the media events for the same period. Higher!
This month chart of signings shows that we had greater success in Canada, and the trend is in the wrong direction, especially in major cities. Some observations:
  • Radio interviews by telephone, especially on morning talk shows, is the easiest media to obtain.
  • TV is much more difficult, except for local cable companies.
  • Most media events happen on Monday to Thursday.
  • Most book signings happen Thursday through Sunday
  • The impact of media on sales is not clear
  • The objective is to get a pile of books in as many book stores as possible, so people see them in each store they visit; frequency is as important as location.
  • Approximately 3600 books were placed in stores as a result of signings over 22 weeks.
  • Chapters, the Canadian arm of Borders, picked up Teach Your Children Well as its national front of store, non-fiction promotion in all 400 stores for January 1999, because of our Book signings in Ontario and Montreal.
  • This selection resulted in the shipment of 5 to 8 copies to the remaining Canadian stores - an order of 1800 books.
  • TYCW is in its 3rd printing since October (5000 per printing.)
  • These data indicate that we range between 30 and 55 events per months as signings
  • There is much greater range of media events (15 to 40 per month.)
