Hi, I am Steven A. I am 14 years old, and this is my second year at BBA. I want to share my Reading Passages charts. As you can see, I made up my mind in November to try to pass a Passage each day, and I have kept it up since then. The way you can see that is by the vertical lines with numbers at the top. Each line represents a Passage that I have mastered. My passing rate was 150 words per minute after you subtract the learning opportunities, but since I have been going so fast, I raised it to 165 wpm. I am in Grade 8 and I am reading material at a Grade 10 level out of the Jamestown graded (Science) series. When I came to BBA I tested on the WRAT at Grade 3.6, and began my reading fluencies at that level.

My January Chart shows that I have kept my promise to myself, except for a couple of weekends off, and the Research Week (they don't give us enough time do do all the fluencies then.) And the updates (July 4) show that I reached another goal. I was reading in the Grade 11 Jamestown Book, and jumped to the last 3 stories in the book just before the end of school! In end-of-year testing on the WRAT, I decoded at the Grade 10 level. P.S. I am going back to the High School in my town next year.
Ian's note: This is a 'Sessions Chart' that shows how hard Steven works. The bottom line (X Axis) is divided by sessions, and the small vertical lines on that axis represent days. Steve regularly does 6 to 8 fluencies per day in order to keep up his record; beginning at 70+ words per minute, and ending only when he has hit his self-imposed goal of 165 wpm.
