Standard Celeration Chart: The chart we use to check our progress at TLI is the Standard Celeration Chart, developed by Ogden Lindsley for use in Precision Teaching. We computerized it, so that after each fluency session, the computer automatically plots the student's score and shows the student's progress.

This is a chart of Jimmy's reading fluencies. He has been reading passages from the SRA Corrective Reading Serics, as fast as he can for one minute. He continues to "do" a fluency on the same passage until he can read it at the rate of 150 words correct per minute. This chart shows that his beginning reading speed is usually around 100 words per minute, and within 3 or 4 days he reaches criterion and passes to the next level (another passage with new vocabulary). His learning opportunities (errors, shown at the bottom of the chart) average 1 per minute, with a high of 4 per minute. In December he decided that he would pass a passage every day, by reading it over and over, as many times as necessary. This chart shows only the best score each day, so Jimmy's chart shows as a straight line of successful passing scores.

At TLI each student uses many charts like this to keep track of personal progress in several areas. Click here for a more detailed description of the Standard Celeration Chart.

The best description of the chart is the Handbook of the Standard Behavior Chart which is available from Xerographics, 927 NW 13th Street, Gainesville, FL 32601. Phone (352) 375-0797.
